Verifying People Search Results in SharePoint 2010 [ Posted on: 16-November-2010 ]

If you are installing and or configuring SharePoint 2010 and want to make sure that the people Search capability in SP2010 is enabled make sure to check the following settings.

  • Have provisioned the User Profile Service application and started the User Profile Synchronisation service and done a full sync – Follow the article “Rational Guide to User Profile Service” from Spencer Harbar @harbars
  • Have provisioned the Enterprise Search service application and verified that normal crawls are working (i.e: SharePoint sites and file system)
  • Provision a “Enterprise Search” center with tabs in a SharePoint web application and verify that Search results are displaying
  • Have added the line “sps3://mysites.knowledgecue.com” in the Start Addresses field > i.e: The sps3:// is the protocol handler reference for profile indexing. In this case I have created this for my “my sites” web application hence “mysites.knowledgecue.com”

    7.AddMySiteURLPath
  • Have added the Search crawler account to have “Retrieve People Data for Search Crawlers” permissions in the User Profile Service Application

    10b.AddSearchCrawlerAccount
  • Run a Full Crawl of the SharePoint sites content source
  • Verify that a Search centre has been created and that the default Search location has been set under site settings for the web application (site collection > settings)

    2.VerifySearchCenter
  • Verify that the web application or site collection where people Search is being configured has the search scope(s) propagated

    1.VerifyPeopleSearchScopes
  • Verify Search results by searching for a person's name in the Search centre under the “People” tab

This ensures that your people Search results have been correctly configured. Bear in mind that you may need to configure additional settings based on your solution that your are creating using the profile data.
