Migrating MCMS content to MOSS [ Posted on: 21-December-2007 ]


I thought I'd share my thoughts and details on migration of MCMS (Microsoft Content Management Server) content to MOSS. Back in the day I used to work with MCMS a lot. When the likes of Andrew Connell, Spencer Harbar who maintained the MCMS FAQ and Angus Logan were indisputably the MCMS gurus of the time! Before I go any further I would like to say that there is an excellent white paper done by Sezai Komur of Vivid Group in Australia. This MCMS to MOSS white paper is very detailed in terms of the steps that is required and is a good guideline for a MCMS to MOSS migration project. The project that I was doing had a relatively easy requirement of migrating across content and then applying the same look and feel and no new enhancements apart from Search integration. As you most probably are aware by the recent high number of posts in the SharePoint Community the service packs for WSS and MOSS are available for download. A few people have asked me if they should immediately apply SP 1. Well yes you should BUT, you should first read the following TechNet article specific to WSS and MOSS SP1 before you start applying the updates on your servers. Links to WSS SP1 and MOSS SP1 can be found on the SharePoint Team Blog. There is also a comprehensive change log of what's included in the Service Pack on the SharePoint Team Blog. And as with any Service Pack make sure that you apply and test service pack to your development or staging server before committing a production SP1 deployment.
