Despite ash clouds and travel disruptions the Combined Knowledge team led by Steve Smith put on one of the best conferences that I have attended. I was one of the lucky few to get on a Eurostar train from Paris to London on Friday 16th just before the major travel disruptions started. Our original flight was not due to fly till Friday evening from Paris but I was not about to take any chances so we got next available Train tickets straightaway from Paris to London. That was lucky since some of the other speakers were unfortunately left stranded in parts of Europe. AC @andrewconnell) was in Norway trying to get out. Joel, Paul Swider and Michael Noel was stranded in Dubrovnik. Bob Fox’s plane was turned away half way through from US to London. It was chaos. Steve called a “War Room” session on Saturday (17th) afternoon to figure out and re-schedule sessions since we’d lost most our speakers from the US who were supposed to speak at the conference. Eric Shupps (Eric also has a great post about the conference) was one of the only US based speakers who made along with Mike Watson who is based in Scotland. By Saturday evening we had rescheduled most of Monday and we had speakers from the UK who picked up the extra sessions. I was originally doing only one session but picked up another extra two sessions to help out. It was amazing how people were willing to step up and help where they could. It shows what a great community of SharePoint speakers we have! By Sunday afternoon we moved to a larger room as we had quite a few people join us and help with taking on sessions. We had Steve Smith leading with Spence Harbar, Neil Hodgkinson, Mirjam van Olst, Mike Watson and Andrew Woody along with a few others join us in the “Situation Room”. Some of the photos are on Flickr and there was a steady stream of twitter updates going on. One of the highlights was Tobias Zimmergren who drove from Sweden to London with Marianne and two others and took the Ferry and Train to get to London! Key note and Sessions Steve, Eric, Brett Londsdale and Spence kicked off the conference key note session on Monday morning. Steve showed the evolution of SharePoint from SharePoint Team Services (STS) back in 1999 through to SPS 2001 and then SPS 2003 and SP2007 (MOSS) and finally SP 2010. Each of them added to the keynote on what it was like to develop applications in those days and what it meant to them to be part of the Evolution. Spence showed the famous MCMS “WoodGrove” demo. For some of the attendees it was the first time to see actual live demos on the earlier versions of SharePoint!. Then it was onto the sessions for the first day. I did a session on WCM for Power Users and how to approach publishing scenarios in the Real World which I will share later on this blog. I also did a session for Planning and Upgrading to SharePoint 2010 which is already on my blog. (See previous post series). Then on the second day I followed this up with a third session which was SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Deep Dive by outlining the upgrade options and doing an actual upgrade with Craig Carpenter of Combined Knowledge. All attendees were treated to an awesome conference party on Tuesday evening with drinks and evening entertainment. It was a great SharePint party! Last day of the conference I was part of the ask the experts panels for IT Pro and Information Worker tracks. It was a great conference with over 650 attendees and a great line up of speakers who took up the challenge and delivered some great sessions. Now looking forward to the New Zealand SharePoint Conference in June! </chandima> 15/01/2010
It’s been a while since my last post and some of you may have thought that I’ve given up on the blog. No I haven’t and I really should not be making any excuses. On reflection last year 2009 has been a blast with some great events that occurred in my personal life and also my professional life (obviously SharePoint related)
Looking ahead at 2010 there are many events that will make 2010 a fantastic year. Just on reflection working on our company Knowledge Cue since 2008 has taught me a lot about work life balance and have provided opportunities which I never thought possible. You can follow Knowledge Cue happenings on our company blog. I use this (my personal) blog to engage with the wider local and international SharePoint community to share my knowledge.
This year I will be attending and in some cases presenting about SharePoint in the following events.
March 2010
Annual Information Management Summit – 9th and 10th March 2010 – Wellington, New Zealand
I will be presenting and facilitating a workshop for the annual conference in New Zealand.
Pre conference - Workshop : Applying Information Architecture Taxonomies and Structure to Your Data to Increase its Usefulness and Value
Information which is currently held and being collecting by organisations contains significant value if it is properly extracted and findable. Before anything significant can really be accomplished the information must be ordered and structured to allow for efficient location of necessary information and for applications to utilise the data and deliver additional benefits. This workshop will provide you with guidance and examples that will take you through taxonomy models and approaches to structuring data. The workshop will also outline governance policies related to Information management.
- Should you redesign or enhance your existing information architecture
- How to approach the change management of information management
- Evaluating your situation to determine if a taxonomy or folksonomy paradigm is more appropriate
- Approaches to standardising meta data across the organization
- Approaches to findability of structured and unstructured data
- Standardising meta data across the organisation
- Maintaining the structure over time with review and governance
Roundtable Discussion : Using SharePoint as a Tool for Driving Increased Productivity of Staff and What Can be Expected from SharePoint 2010
Presentation : Extracting Tangible Benefits to Working Processes from SharePoint
SharePoint is just like any other tool, it needs to serve a specific function rather just being used for the sake of it. Given that benefits of SharePoint are entirely user dependant, how do you ensure that your users are actually gaining benefits from its use? Discover how to manage people to take advantage of what SharePoint offers for Information Management.
- Identifying business areas which SharePoint can best add value
- Overcoming the common human factor barriers to beneficial SharePoint usage
- Launching SharePoint and continuing it’s development based on staff feedback
Registrations for the Information Management Summit are now available on the event web site : http://www.brightstar.co.nz/conferences/8th-annual-information-management-summit
April 2010
SharePoint Evolution Conference 2010- 19th to 21st April – London
I will be attending and presenting a session at this conference in London. With over 20 leading experts and speakers this conference will be one the premier SharePoint events in Europe.
Presentation : WCM for the power user: how to use publishing technologies in the real world – In the case of developing a WCM (web content management) site the quite often overlooked factor is the interaction of the power users in the publishing and content creation process. In this session we will look at the planning stages of a real world WCM project to ensure that the WCM site is developed with features that are available for power users to publish and manage WCM sites. We will look at how to ensure that these are used in the correct context and demonstrate the different approaches and pros and cons of each approach.

29/06/2009
We recently announced to all our registered delegates about the “Ask the Experts” Keynote panel that will be held at NZSPC on Friday, July 03, 2009 starting at 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM (New Zealand Time) in the Duxton Ballroom. You can now post your questions on the user group site.
So far we have received the following questions. We’ll take the best one’s and answer these at the conference. I will also post answers on my blog for some of these.
Questions so far..
User Adoption - There are lots of books about SharePoint on the market. If we customise our SharePoint user interface will these books still be useful to my users?
Web Content Management - I know there is the reusable snippets library which is great for small pieces of content. But how can I reuse whole pages so they appear in different parts of my website without sending the user to another part of the site?
Infrastructure - Can you describe some of the challenges of setting up Kerberos authentication in load balanced environments?
User Adoption - When is SharePoint not the right tool for the job?
Search - What is the easiest way to make the results of a search more useful, i.e. so that you have the context menu option for performing actions rather than just a link to the item.
My Sites - What is the best way to update everyone's existing My Sites e.g. remove their My Mail webpart and add a My Calendar web part into the same location?
Business Data Catalog - If I customise a New Item form, with Business Data Catalog (BDC) information included, how can I get the BDC lookup to populate the list. Only works when you use the standard New Item form.
Infrastructure - In a SharePoint server farm, it appears the Site Usage Reports do not work. Can access the data with SharePoint Designer, but the Usage Reports when sitting on the secondary farm server, the Site Sertting options fail.
Web Content Management - If you're using content deployment to push out published content to a read-only site, but want to add interactivity (e.g. comments on a blog), what's the best way to combine the read-only deployed content, and the read/write interactive content?
Please keep adding questions, if we can’t answer these at the experts panel I am sure these will be answered via a follow up blog post.
Follow the NZ SharePoint twitter channel for conference updates and news.
Steve Smith (MVP) is running an advanced architecture workshop next week and we still have some places left. This is one of the premier SharePoint architect workshops and is highly recommended to any SharePoint administrator. Details are on here.

Using the AJAX Controls Toolbox in SharePoint – Wednesday 27th of May 2009
AJAX for SharePoint can seem quite a daunting task, especially when stumbling across endless blog posts which are completely out of date and are giving wrong or misleading advice. With SP1 for SharePoint Microsoft fixed a few internal glitches in regards to using AJAX and with .NET 3.5 and VS 2008, creating AJAX Controls has never been easier. In this session Alex Dean, SharePoint Consultant and MCT will show you step by step how to configure SharePoint for AJAX, create a simple SharePoint WebPart using the Visual Studio Extensions, add the ability to customise the WebPart using the browser and finally populate an Accordion AJAX Control with the information gathered from a list on your SharePoint Site. Great example for creating dynamic FAQ pages in SharePoint.

Thursday 28th May Regular Wellington SharePoint User Group Session
Seamless Teamwork in 60 Minutes, with Michael Sampson - Thursday 28th of May 2009
So you've got SharePoint, and IT wants you to use it for team projects. But as a business person, you're saying "How?" I can tell you.
Microsoft Press has just published my book, "Seamless Teamwork: Using Microsoft SharePoint Technologies to Collaborate, Innovate, and Drive Business in New Ways". The book helps people in collaborative teams envision how to accomplish their work using Microsoft SharePoint. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate how SharePoint can be used to support team collaboration, innovation and the carrying out of daily business activities. The book is organized around the idea of someone getting a new project to lead at their place of work, and then examines how SharePoint supports the execution of that project. While the book focuses specifically on this fictional project, the main ideas and issues faced by the users will be experienced generally by all SharePoint users. Thus you can take the main ideas and apply them to your projects. Seamless Teamwork is aimed at people in business teams who are using SharePoint. It is not a complex IT book, although IT people will benefit from its insight into how people can use SharePoint.
Join Michael on Thursday May 28 at the Wellington SharePoint User Group meeting for a whistle-stop tour of Seamless Teamwork. I'll talk about the main messages of the book, and give examples of how and why certain technology components of SharePoint can be used in specific ways within the life of a collaborative team project.
There will be a prize draw for a signed copy of Seamless Teamwork.
Intended Audience: Managers, business analysts, information workers, project managers and IT professionals who have been asked to use SharePoint and are uncertain how to begin.
Presented by: Michael Sampson, The Michael Sampson Company
